Description
This is the first course of an integrated and investigative mathematics curriculum which is designed to use patterns, modeling, and conjectures to build student understanding and competency in the subject matter. The course includes many mathematical disciplines: Topics that will extend students’ understanding of standards from the conceptual categories of Number and Quantity, Algebra, Functions, Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. Instructions will focus on seven critical areas: (1) extend understanding of numerical manipulation to algebraic manipulation; (2) synthesize understanding of function; (3) deepen and extend understanding of linear relationships; (4) apply linear models to data that exhibit a linear trend; (5) introduce quadratic patterns and its relationships (6) establish criteria for congruence based on rigid motions; and (7) apply the Pythagorean Theorem to the coordinate plane. Technology tools are an important part of student learning. By using technology students will collect and model data, be able to make conjectures about the data that would help to develop a robust understanding of the mathematical principles involved. Students are expected to learn through collaboration, collection of data, experimentation, and conjectures.
