Construction Tech 2

This course centers on the ground-up construction of a “scaled structure”, which is a shed-sized building, using current construction techniques and adhering to current  building code requirements. 


Construction techniques and activities will continue to expand, with opportunities to learn about and practice green building techniques, interpretation of construction documents, building codes, estimating, business structure and related topics.   


Students may obtain OSHA 10 hour safety certification, which has proven to be a valuable asset to young job-seekers, regardless of the type of job they seek.  More focus on job-readiness and “professional skills” will take precedent.


Students will be instructed regarding “Title 24”, California Energy Code Requirements necessary to obtain building plans approval and acceptance.


Various types of business structures will be covered, including formation of Limited Liability Companies, Corporations, Sole proprietorships etc.  Students will gain an understanding of the benefits and limitations of the individual entities, as well as the necessary steps and requirements to obtain a Contractor’s License.


Students will practice and hone their  estimating skills, including material take-offs, square footage calculations, cubic yard calculations etc. so they may increase understanding of the relation between business overhead and profit margin percentages, and ultimately, in the success of a business plan.


Students will continue to be instructed in the relationship between a safe work environment and profitability. Students may gain  an understanding of how workplace accidents and claims affect the bottom line of a business and the necessity of comprehensive safety training programs.


Upon completion of this course students should have an understanding of how construction companies are created, structured and organized. In addition, students should have an understanding of marketability skills that can give them a boost as they enter the workplace.
