Biology (Period 3)

Course Description

Welcome to my biology class. The purpose of the biology course is to provide a one year lab-based biology course which introduces students to the principal concepts of biology and the scientific methodologies used in biology. The tentative goals for this year are to learn about:

- major macromolecules (proteins, lipids, saccharides, and nucleic acids);
- Human physiology: the digestive, excretory, nervous, circulatory, respiratory, and immune systems and diseases.
- cells structure, function and energetic (growth and division, respiration, photosynthesis);
- the central dogma (DNA ->RNA->protein) and genetic engineering;
- Mendelian genetics and trait inheritance patterns;
- ecology: the study of interactions among organisms and between organisms and their environment, or surroundings;
- evolution (natural selection, speciation).

The following instructional strategies will be used: reading guides/graphic organizers pulled out from the Prentice Hall Biology curriculum (Miller / Levine); laboratories & projects; online simulations and tutorials; homework to review vocabulary and concepts.
