Interior Design 

Grades: 10-12  

Length: One Year

Prerequisite: IED                  
Foundations Course, Pathway to Engineering

The study of functional and aesthetic interior design principles used to create residential interiors. Beginning drafting, space planning, the use of color and the application of these skills in design are stressed. A survey of major twentieth-century architects and designers and their influence on design and lifestyle is analyzed. Instruction is given in furniture arrangement and selection, materials selection, lighting, and the effects of environmental design on human behavior.

The topics below are among the essential skills for this program. This is not a comprehensive list of all available skills and goals, but given to show the scope of the curriculum. If you find you are not familiar with the meaning of the course topics, don't worry that's the language of engineering and design! You will master it one step at a time. Changes may occur year to year based on industry input, change in focus, or other factors. Please contact the program instructor or administration for additional information. 

Note: This course focuses on all aspects of interior design. While interior decorating plays a large role in interior design, it is important to remember that the two are not the same. This course will not go into great detail about interior decorating, but, rather, will provide an overview of the kind of information interior designers will need to know.

 

Specific Course Objectives:
Upon successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

  1. Identify a variety of lifestyles through an examination of the environment and interpret how those lifestyles are manifested through the use of design;
  2. Analyze and recommend an approach to the problems of interior design utilizing information presented in the course;
  3. Identify major architectural styles, symbols and details as used on floor plans and working drawings;
  4. Identify themes of rooms and be able to identify the ways or techniques used to achieve a specific theme in a room;
  5. Analyze floor plans in terms of personal value and orientation;
  6. Recognize, define and apply the principles of art to interior design: balance, rhythm, proportion and emphasis;
  7. Create a harmonious arrangement in a room using different types of line, texture, shape, sizes and color;
  8. Identify and define good structural design and good decorative design in architecture, furniture, fabrics and accessories;
  9. Identify and create the different types of color schemes as they are used in interior design;
  10. Create pleasing and functional furniture arrangements for a given floor plan.
